Data - Submissions

Please contribute to the Boulder Facility Archive immediately after Campaign completion or Permanent Station installation to best preserve time-sensitive information. You are advised to consult the data policy adopted by the UNAVCO Board of Directors for data submission requirements. Information about the existence of the data, and the general location and duration of the Campaign or Permanent Station are shown as soon as archiving is completed when pertinent search criteria are given on the Archive Campaign and Permanent Station search pages.

The data archiving process uses teqc to extract pertinent metadata from the submitted data files. Therefore, all data that is submitted must be a format readable by teqc to be individually cataloged with its metadata.

After submission and archiving at the Facility, NSF-funded data are generally immediately publicly-accessible; Campaign data older that 2011 may be embargoed for up to two years. Data collected under NASA-funding, whether Campaign or Permanent Station, are immediately available after submission and archiving at the Facility.

For submitting Campaign data:

  1. You may have already submitted a request for project support if you required UNAVCO equipment or Field Engineer support for this project. If not, please submit a completed project support request form, requesting Data Archive support only.
  2. Prepare and submit copies of site descriptions, logsheets and other paperwork along with the data. Logsheets are critical to the process, so allow time for accurate and readable copies to be made. You may wish to use UNAVCO-developed forms to document your field work.
  3. Raw data is the primary format to be archived. In some cases, raw data files are not available, since they were translated into an exchange format (e.g. FICA or RINEX) and then the original raw data were discarded. For the latter cases, send the data in the exchange format. In other cases, the raw data might have required exceptional efforts to translate into RINEX (or another exchange format) and you may wish for this to be preserved as well. In these cases, send both the raw data and the exchange format. Standard submission is via FTP, but must be coordinated with Data Group staff. Other media such as tape and CDs can also be submitted; please coordinate with Data Group staff.
  4. Mail any media and paper forms, logsheets, etc. (safely-packaged) to the Data Group.

For submitting Permanent Station data:

  1. Same as step 1 above for Campaigns.
  2. Select a 4-character ID for each new site that is installed, but make sure each new ID is not in use elsewhere by checking with the UNAVCO ID checker and the SOPAC database.
  3. Submit the minimum station information for the new permanent station. Type the 4-character ID in the "4 CH ID" box and then fill out the form and click "Submit" at the bottom. The information you supply will be used to populate the RINEX header and IGS log so be 100% certain that it is correct!
  4. Contact the archive staff, preferably David Maggert by email, to coordinate the final details (e.g. identified data flow, data format, file naming issues, media accepted and so on). Data flow for permanent stations can be any of the following:
    1. FTP dropoff
    2. FTP pickup
    3. LDM
    4. secure shell scp pickup
    5. mailing of physical media to Boulder Facility Archive
  5. You are encouraged to formalize the documentation for each permanent station, possibly using the UNAVCO Continuous Site Installation Report form as a template.

Thanks, and we look forward to working with you!
