PBO Data: Strain Offsets Following Passage of Seismic Waves

The EarthScope Plate Boundary Observatory strainmeters in Southern California recorded significant strain offsets following the passage of seismic waves from the M6.9 Gulf of California earthquake on August 3. Although the earthquake was too small and too distant (at 600+ km) to have influenced static strain at the PBO sites directly, earthquake-triggered slip on nearby faults may have been responsible for the observed strain anomalies. The Denali Earthquake of 2002 was also responsible for triggering fault slip in the western United States, but it occurred before the PBO strainmeter network was in place to observe the effects.
