About our program
RESESS is a summer internship program dedicated to increasing the diversity of students entering the geosciences.
The goal of the RESESS Internship program is to increase the number of students that are underrepresented in the geosciences relative to their proportions in the general population.
We introduce students to scientific research, prepare students for graduate school, and provide support and encouragement as students build skills and confidence. Students experience an authentic research experience and are encouraged to consider graduate school with an eye to a career in science, whether that is in research, teaching, or industry.

10th cohort hits the ground running
The 2014 summer started with a week packed with training and orientation. On May 18th, the RESESS interns joined the SOARS (Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science) protégés and NEON (National Ecological Observatory Network) interns for a joint meet-and-greet and welcome dinner on the University of Colorado – Boulder campus.
On Monday, May 19th, Rex Baum of the U.S. Geological Survey gave students a break from their UNAVCO orientation with a science seminar on the Oso, Washington and Front Range, Colorado landslide events, followed by lunch with RESESS interns, mentors, and UNAVCO staff.
The RESESS interns again joined the SOARS and NEON students to participate in a day-long workshop to build leadership skills and practice communication strategies for the summer and beyond, facilitated by local experts from 5.12 Solutions.
Orientation and leadership training concluded with group tours of UNAVCO, NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research), and NEON. Students and staff were able to explore terrestrial laser scanning at UNAVCO, 3-D data visualization at the NCAR Mesa Lab, and engineering for ecological observatories at NEON.
The interns’ first day of work was Thursday, May 22, 2014, and as they settle in with their research projects, writing workshop, communications seminar, and GRE course, we are looking forward to a rewarding summer full of learning and new experiences.

New in summer 2014
This year RESESS is incorporating a new element into the summer program, designed to explore non-academic scientific communications. The seminar is being taught by UNAVCO Outreach Specialist Beth Bartel, and will help provide tools for interns to make a broader impact with their science, improve their confidence in public speaking and using social media for outreach, improve interns’ professional presence online, and help interns develop the tools they need to apply for a job or graduate school.

As we noted above, the end of the 2014 summer marks the close of the 10th year of the UNAVCO RESESS program. We have exciting developments coming up and we look forward to announcing them soon!
