About our program
RESESS is a summer internship program dedicated to increasing the diversity of students entering the geosciences.
The goal of the RESESS Internship program is to increase the number of students that are underrepresented in the geosciences relative to their proportions in the general population.
We introduce students to scientific research, prepare students for graduate school, and provide support and encouragement as students build skills and confidence in conducting geoscience research and promoting themselves professionally. Students participate in an authentic research experience and are encouraged to consider graduate school with an eye to a career in science, whether that is in research, teaching, or industry.
2014 summer in review
The 2014 cohort of RESESS interns has departed Boulder after successfully completing their research internship summer. Ten interns from ten different institutions across the country participated in a summer full of research, writing, and communications training. Five of the interns were returning for their second year with RESESS and five of the interns participated for the first time.
On July 30th, the eight students from Cohort 1 presented their research talks in a morning colloquium at UNAVCO, and the following afternoon they presented their research posters at a joint poster session with SOARS, NEON, RECCS, and PRECIP held at the UCAR Center Green campus. On August 22nd, the two interns from Cohort 2 presented their research talks during a lunchtime Science Seminar at UNAVCO. Program news
The end of the 2014 RESESS summer marked the end of the five-year NSF Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences RESESS award, and we are excited to report that NSF has agreed to support the program for an additional two years via a supplement to the UNAVCO Geodesy Advancing Geosciences and Earthscope (GAGE) facility award.
This fall, several of the 2014 interns will present their research at both GSA and AGU, so keep an eye on the RESESS website and Facebook page for updates on the scheduled times for their presentations.
Finally, it is almost time for the 2015 RESESS internship application portal to open. If you know of eligible students who would be great interns for summer 2015, make sure they know that applications will be accepted starting November 17, 2014. The application portal will close at 11:59 p.m. MST on February 1, 2015.

Alumni spotlight: Amanda Labrado
"During my time [in Boulder], I met so many incredible people; some have become long lasting friendships, others were professional connections that I'm still in contact with who continue to help me. Not only did RESESS provide me with a great personal and professional network of support and encouragement, they also helped provide me with the tools and skills I needed strengthening for my future endeavors."
RESESS alumna Amanda Labrado has been around the world before and since her time in Boulder as part of the 2013 cohort. In January 2014, Amanda began her doctoral program at the Pennsylvania State University under Dr. Jennifer Macalady to study the effects of microbial biofilms on sulfur cycling within caves as an analog for ancient Earth and other planets’ environments. Amanda tells us that because of the project she completed with RESESS, the transition from rocks to microbes was relatively smooth and allowed her to quickly adapt to new lab techniques.
She recently traveled to Italy to sample microbial biofilms in the Frasassi caves and participated in the 2014 NASA International Summer School in Astrobiology at the Spanish National University (UIMP) summer campus in Santander, Spain. Currently back in the United States, Amanda plans on completing candidacy in March 2015.
