Data Event Response to the January 7, 2020 M 6.4 Earthquake 8 km S of Indios, Puerto Rico

Event Summary

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred at 08:24:26 UTC on January 7, 2020, 8 km S of Indios, Puerto Rico. For more information, see the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program event page.

The event occured within the Network of the Americas (NOTA) footprint. NOTA is a core component of the NSF Geodetic Facility for the Advancement of Geoscience (GAGE), operated by UNAVCO.

GAGE Response

NOTA GPS/GNSS Real Time Data Solutions
Signals from this event were recorded by 8 GPS/GNSS stations within 300 km of the epicenter operated by UNAVCO that were streaming high rate (1-sps / 1 Hz) data in real time (Figures 2 and 3). These data allowed peak ground displacements (PGD) to be calculated automatically from the displacement traces within seconds of the earthquake (Figure 3). Dynamic ground displacements of about ~2.5 centimeters were recorded by the nearest real-time site, P780, as the surface wave generated by the earthquake propagated away from the epicenter. NOTA GPS/GNSS High Rate Data for Post Processing
UNAVCO downloaded high-rate 1-sps (1 Hz) data from 16 GPS/GNSS stations operated by UNAVCO within ~300 km of the epicenter for a 1-day time window centered on the event. A map of downloaded stations is shown in Figure 1. When downloaded, these data are available in RINEX format from the UNAVCO high rate data ftp site.

GAGE GPS/GNSS Displacement Estimates
Coseismic offsets from this event were estimated by the GAGE GPS Analysis Center Coordinator (ACC), Professor Tom Herring (MIT). Preliminary offsets are tabulated and published in an event (*.EVT) file available from the UNAVCO data products ftp site. As more data and final orbits become available, the ACC will also produce a “final” offset solution, as well as offsets estimated from Kalman filter time series analyses. Final and Kalman filter offset files will be added to the event file at the event products ftp site.
