The UNAVCO Board of Directors announces the selection of Dr. Rebecca Bendick as the fourth president of UNAVCO. Dr. Bendick was selected after an extensive recruitment and selection process. The Boulder, Colorado based UNAVCO is a non-profit, university governed consortium dedicated to advancing geoscience research and education through geodesy. UNAVCO operates the GAGE facility on behalf of the National Science Foundation and also receives funding from NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey.
Dr. Bendick joins UNAVCO from the University of Montana where she served as professor of geophysics and co-chair of the department of geosciences. Her scientific research uses geodetic data to study tectonics, the earthquake cycle, hydrologic loading, and natural hazards. She has a longstanding interest in the relationship between scientific advances and more resilient human communities.
As a long-time community member of UNAVCO, Dr. Bendick served two terms on the UNAVCO Board of Directors and for six years on the UNAVCO Facilities Advisory Committee. She is Co-Editor in Chief of Earth and Planetary Sciences Letters, and has served on multiple steering and science advisory committees for national science programs and facilities.
