GPS Campaigns - Monumentation
|
Geodetic monuments for GPS campaigns ensure that the surveyed point is directly coupled to the solid earth.
The marks are typically flush or near the surface for stability, minimal visibility, security, and low cost.
During campaigns, the GPS antenna is temporarily mounted above the monument using one of various set-ups such as
tripods, spike mounts, leveling mounts, or monument specific mounts. In every case, the antenna must be precisely
centered and leveled, and the antenna height above the monument must be measured or known. Ideally, GPS monuments
are placed in bedrock.

Considerations when selecting campaign monuments and mounts include:
Surface composition - is bedrock available? If not, concrete pier style monuments may be required.
Surface obstructions - can the antenna be mounted low, or does it need to be elevated for good sky visibility?
Multipath - mounting the antenna higher typically reduces multipath.
Stability - mounting the antenna lower may increase stability, especially in high winds.
Security - mounting the antenna lower reduces site visibility.
Dimpled vs. threaded monuments - dimpled monuments allow universal mounting options, threaded monuments are more stable but may require specialized antenna mounts.
