GPS Campaigns - Project Training Course Outline
Also available as a PDF document. Summary: This document provides a brief outline of the standard UNAVCO GPS training course for campaign style GPS projects and covers many aspects of high precision GPS surveying, from taking the equipment out of the box to archiving and processing the data. This document is intended as an introduction to be used prior to training by a UNAVCO field engineer, as a reference guide after completing the UNAVCO training, and as a refresher for those with previous GPS equipment experience. It also serves as a general GPS primer for scientists who are considering using GPS in their research. This outline is not a replacement for field training by a UNAVCO field engineer, as it is not as comprehensive nor tailored to a specific application. The training courses are offered on-demand, and are tailored to specific project objectives. The course is typically held over three days, and with one or two students per instructor. Although some GPS theory is covered during the training, the course focuses on practical experience and is mainly hands on. New GPS users are encouraged to spend some time at the web sites noted in sections 1 and 2 to get a general understanding of the principles of differential GPS before receiving training from UNAVCO. Principal Investigators (PIs) requesting support from UNAVCO are also encouraged to look at the UNAVCO Investigator’s Manual, which provides detailed information to assist PIs in the successful preparation and execution of research projects that use UNAVCO resources.
