QUALCOMM Globalstar Satellite Data Modem (GSP-1620)
Testing BriefThe Globalstar GSP-1620 Satellite Data Modem is suitable for remote, DC based permanent GPS station installations. The modem operates on 5.6-16 VDC with a transmit power consumption of 4.8 W and a receive consumption of 0.5 W. The satellite data modem operates at 9.6 kbps with an average throughput of 7.6-8 kbps. The satellite data modem has two data modes -- IP packet and asynchronous (dial-up) modes. For IP-packet transmission to a local ISP there is no roaming charge. For dial-up stations outside of the United States there is a $2.99 / minute charge in addition to the $1.99 / minute communications cost1. Data transmission time for a 1.2 Mb file is between2 1500 sec (25 min) and 1580 sec (26.3 min) based on average throughput. The cost to transmit a 1.2 Mb file is approximately $50.00 without roaming charges applied. (1) Costs may vary based on service provider.
