Permanent GPS Stations - Antenna Radomes

Many permanent GPS stations are equipped with antenna radomes (radar domes) as a means of protection against general wear, to prevent the buildup of debris and snow, and to discourage people and animals from disturbing the antenna. However, these antenna covers affect the signal propagation and thus the estimated position, particularly the vertical component. Many tests have been performed in order to understand the affects on station coordinates when a radome is placed on a choke ring antenna. The errors introduced can change baseline height solutions between 2 mm and 40 mm depending on the cover type, the antenna type, and the elevation cutoff angle used for data processing.
