Polar Services - Atqasuk GPS Base Station

Description:

A GPS base station (ATQK) in Atqasuk provides a local source of geodetic quality differential corrections for GPS data post-processing by scientists and others operating in the Atqasuk area on the Alaska North Slope. The station is located at the ARM Climate Research Facility (ACRF) which provides security, power, and ethernet communications. The antenna is mounted on the mezzanine railing of the ACRF facility, which sits on a gravel pad on unconsolidated earth just to the southeast of town. This base station is not user configurable, and there is no need for users to have physical access to the receiver.

The Trimble NetRS receiver with Zephyr Geodetic antenna are operated remotely by UNAVCO as part of general GPS support provided to the NSF-OPP Arctic program, and specifically for users who have requested base GPS data in Atqasuk similar to that provided by UNAVCO and the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC) in Barrow. The system provides the following data in Trimble .T00 format, 0 degree elevation mask:

  • 15 second, 24 hour (UTC) data files (site ATQK archived at UNAVCO)

  • 5 second, hourly data files (1 month memory ring buffer)

  • 1 second, hourly data files (3 week memory ring buffer)

  • 10 Hz, hourly data files (2 day memory ring buffer)

The 15 second sample rate data are available from the UNAVCO data archive. The higher sample rate data are recorded on the receiver only. Due to limited bandwidth, access to high rate data requires login access, available from BASC-IT. To access the data files connect directly to the receiver at 192.148.95.244 and select Data Logging/Data Files (login required).

Additional GPS rover equipment for differential measurements and software and computers are available at BASC in Barrow. BASC computers can be used to configure the rover GPS receivers, download data, and post-process data. Contact BASC-IT regarding access to GPS software as necessary. General technical support is also available from UNAVCO by email: Contact UNAVCO Support (supportunavco.org)
