Polar Services - Barrow GPS Survey System - Available Equipment

Equipment Available

A geodetic system consisting of a dual-frequency base station and roving receiver capable of centimeter-level accuracy is available at BASC. Real-time kinematic (RTK) broadcasts provide real-time capability within a seven kilometer radius of BASC. By collecting and post-processing data, centimeter-level accuracy can be realized over 100 kilometers away from the Barrow and Atqasuk base stations. Data processing computers are set up at the BASC facility. A portable repeater is also available to ensure line-of-sight radio coverage for RTK work within the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO). A second GPS base station in Barrow, the Barrow SuomiNet site, provides a backup to the BASC base station for post-processing. Data from this site are available on-line from the UNAVCO Data Archive (http://facility.unavco.org/data/data.html and ftp://data-out.unavco.org/pub/rinex/obs).

The following GPS equipment is available for use at BASC:
Trimble NetRS Base Station
Fixed geodetic GPS base station for data collection and RTK broadcasting.
Data Processing Computers
Most shared computers at BASC are loaded with Trimble Geomatics Office data processing software.
Trimble R7 and R8 Rover Survey Systems
Geodetic GPS receivers and ancillary field equipment that provides centimeter accuracy in real-time (RTK) or through data collection and post-processing.
Pacific Crest RFM96W Radio Repeater
Radio repeater to improve RTK broadcast reception in areas that are not within line of sight of the base station transmissions.

SuomiNet auxilliary GPS base station

Barrow SuomiNet Station SG27
A fixed geodetic GPS base station is located at the NOAA GMD Facility, and provides a post-processing backup to the GPS base station at BASC. RINEX data files (15 sec) are available on-line from the UNAVCO Data Archive. Five second data are available by email request from the UNAVCO Archive (archiveunavco.org).
