Support and Documentation

Technical support to survey system users is provided by UNAVCO and BASC.

BASC-IT provides oversight of the equipment, and manages equipment scheduling and check-out/check-in to users. BASC-IT also maintains the base station (this is not user configurable) and rover system batteries and charging systems.

UNAVCO provides more in-depth technical support, including focused training to local support providers (such as summer interns). Users who intend to use the system for a significant amount of field surveying are strongly encouraged to arrange for training at the UNAVCO Facility in Boulder, Colorado prior to their field season. UNAVCO field support may also be available for projects with a significant GPS surveying component. Specific on-line documentation is available below for users familiar with GPS surveying and data processing, and complete system documentation is available at BASC. Remote (email and telephone) support is also provided by UNAVCO. Support in Barrow may be limited. Upon project completion, GPS data and meta-data archival is available from UNAVCO for permanent safeguarding.

    How to Request Support:
  • Schedule GPS training or request field support from UNAVCO: UNAVCO On-line Support Request Form
  • Schedule and reserve GPS equipment: Contact the BASC IT coordinator(brad.heastonarcticscience.org)
  • Technical support questions - email: Contact UNAVCO Support (supportunavco.org)
  • Data archiving questions: Contact UNAVCO Archive (archiveunavco.org)

Collecting and processing quality GPS data requires a systematic approach and an understanding of the basics of GPS surveying. The Differential GPS Handbook provides documentation tailored to the Barrow system and it maintained by Barrow system users, while the documents listed below below provide more general information for help getting started.

Want to Test the System?

New users are encouraged to use the system to survey or stake out well known points as a shakedown excercise to gain familiarity with the system prior to conducting surveys for their own research. The following benchmarks have been surveyed and provide useful test points for tutorial surveys, or as control points during field surveys. Post-processed and real time survey coordinates of these points will agree within 2cm horizontal and 5 cm vertical if the surveying and processing was done correctly. Use a handheld GPS to locate the benchmarks if necessary.
