Summary:
Dr. Fountain requested GPS support prior to the field season to obtain precise coordinates for glacial monitoring
stakes on five Taylor Valley glaciers (Canada, Commonwealth, Howard, Seuss, and Taylor). Stakes on four of these
glaciers were surveyed during the 1995-96 season. By repeating the GPS measurements, glacier velocity profiles
were obtained, contributing valuable data to the mass-balance study in Taylor Valley. Repeat measurements on the
Canada glacier verified the preliminary velocity results obtained during the 1995-96 field season.
Other support included obtaining glacier topography on several cross sections of the Canada Glacier using the
continuous kinematic data collection strategy. In addition, meter level positions of various meteorological stations,
stream gauges, and other features in Taylor Valley were obtained.
Refresher training was provided to field team member Paul Langevin on equipment set-up and operation, data
management, and data processing. Mr. Langevin had attended a GPS training session at UNAVCO before the
previous field season. Field engineering support was provided during the initial surveys.
