Polar Services - 1995-96 Season Report
UNAVCO GPS Support to the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs SHIPPINGMost of the equipment was shipped from UNAVCO to Port Hueneme, where it entered the USAP cargo stream to McMurdo Station. The equipment was shipped from UNAVCO September 22, 1995 and was at McMurdo Station by October 12 when the field engineer arrived. Two new Trimble receivers (part of the RTK system) were not yet delivered from the manufacturer by the time the main shipment left CONUS. This system was sent down as a special shipment by ASA and was unpacked, inventoried, and tested by the field engineer at McMurdo Station. The four TurboRogue receivers were shipped directly to S-098 at the Support Office for Aerogeophysical Research (SOAR) in Austin, Texas prior to fielding to allow for special preparation and testing. The S-098 field party arranged all further shipping to Byrd Surface Camp. All UNAVCO equipment was shipped COMAIR between Port Hueneme and Christchurch, with most of the equipment returned from McMurdo Station to Christchurch by ship. The equipment was shipped COMAIR since it is part of the UNAVCO community equipment pool required to meet other UNAVCO community requests. To reduce future shipping costs, several tripods and gel cell batteries were left at McMurdo Station for the next field season. UNAVCO is working to reduce the cost associated with removing the stenciling on the plastic boxes used to ship equipment both to Antarctica and to and from field sites. The facility will pre-package the plastic cases in larger cardboard boxes to avoid the stenciling done by the Port Hueneme cargo handlers when shipping to Antarctica. This past season all pertinent shipping information was printed on paper labels which were glued to the boxes returning from McMurdo Station. This was done at the recommendation of USAP cargo handlers to allow for quick return and easier cleaning back at UNAVCO.
