UNAVCO GPS Support to the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs

PROJECT PRIORITIZING

UNAVCO's goal for Polar Programs research projects is to provide high quality GPS support to as many projects as possible with the available resources. UNAVCO follows guidelines as suggested by NSF and works closely with NSF to prioritize the use of resources in the event of conflicts or potential overloading of resources. For the 1995-96 season, prioritization of projects was conducted during discussions with NSF program managers during the Facility budget discussions. The following priority categories were established:

Priority 1:

  • Projects to which high precision GPS data are of primary scientific necessity.

  • Projects that have included the use of high precision GPS in the NSF funded proposals.

Priority 2:

  • Projects where the use of GPS support greatly simplifies field operations.

  • Projects where GPS support provides significant secondary science data.

(Most projects supported fall into these categories.)

Priority 3:

  • Projects where high precision GPS does not contribute significantly to scientific objectives.

  • Projects that did not request support prior to the field season.

  • Technical or other support events.
