Polar Services - 1995-96 Season Report
UNAVCO GPS Support to the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs TRAININGTraining in proper field procedures for data acquisition is crucial to obtaining quality GPS data. This is especially true for new users operating without direct field support. To optimize the use of field time in Antarctica, UNAVCO provides several options for training field teams. These include training before deployment to the field, training in the field, and direct field engineering support during the project. A four day training course for new GPS users was held at the UNAVCO Boulder facility in early September. This course covered GPS theory, project planning, equipment set-up and operation, polar-specific applications, documentation, data management, and data processing. Most of the course was "hands-on". Five grantees attended the course, representing S-042F, S-042W, S-181, S-185, and T-531. These projects were also given refresher training or direct field support in Antarctica. A similar course will be offered for the upcoming season as necessary. An alternative to a pre-season course is training by a field engineer at the field area during the start of the individual field campaigns. Due to the remoteness of some project locations, field support is not always possible, necessitating a thorough GPS project shakedown at McMurdo prior to deep field deployment.
