Science & Technology

The primary product of the UNAVCO community is scientific results - peer reviewed publications - related to Earth processes, but of necessity it is also a technology intensive community because of its dependence on very specialized applications of a space-based system. As part of its early history, UNAVCO community members assisted in developing the tools, techniques, and global infrastructure required for precise geodesy using the Global Positioning System (GPS). Below are provided links to various science products, documents related to specific GPS Earth sciences applications, the results of various GPS development and testing activities supporting precise geodetic applications, and recent technology highlights from the community.

Science Products

The UNAVCO community has traditionally exchanged results through providing raw and/or RINEX GPS data from archives and individual investigators; this link to the UNAVCO, Inc. Web site highlights the increasing availability of data products such as globally distributed vectors in a consistent reference frame and maps of global strain rate data designed for both the GPS specialist and non-specialist.

Development & Testing

The UNAVCO Facility regularly conducts tests of new GPS receivers, antennas and antenna domes, ancillary equipment required for continuous data collection including advanced data communications technologies and low-power PC's, and conducts studies to quantify potential sources of measurement error; this link takes you to recent test results.
