Technology Highlights - New Permanent Station in Mt. Erebus, Antarctica Network

UNAVCO has installed a Trimble 5700 system as a remote permanent station on Mt. Erebus, Antarctica. This is the second dual-frequency permanent station installed by UNAVCO and New Mexico Tech on the world's southernmost active volcano. In addition to providing displacements, data from this site will complement annual campaign-style surveys and provide ionospheric corrections to the three single frequency GPS stations in the network.

The Trimble 5700 receiver was selected for this application due to its low power consumption and removable memory. The 3W power consumption will allow the site to operate through most of the four month long Antarctic winter with solar panels and a battery bank. Data from the 128Mb compact flashcard will be retrieved twice a year for post-processing and archiving. The Zephyr antenna is mounted on a 5/8 threaded stainless steel benchmark with a UNAVCO fixed height leveling mount.
