Technology Highlights - Wind Power Generator Evaluation

In cooperation with the Mountain Research Station (MRS), operated by the University of Colorado, Boulder, the UNAVCO Facility has installed a wind generator test system at Niwot Ridge. Located at 11,600ft and about 20 miles west of Boulder, this facility hosts several meteorological and earth science stations, including a UNAVCO Souminet station.

This testing is intended to broaden the capabilities for UNAVCO to offer alternative power solutions for remote permanent stations. With possible regional applications such as Antarctica and Alaska, this test is intended to evaluate the generator in both extreme cold weather as well as high velocity and gusty winds, upwards of 100 MPH. Power delivery as well as physical stamina of the system and components are being evaluated and closely monitored via voltage sensors, a live web cam, and human monitoring of the system by UNAVCO and MRS personnel.

More information on the wind system, testing, installations, pictures, schematics and data can be found at the UNAVCO Wind Power homepage.
